Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Charaxes smaragdalis habitat ranges from lowland rainforest in the west and gallery forest in the south to patches of lowland and montane forest in the east.
Adults are black with white and blue bands and spots. The hindwings each have two little tails.
They utilize their large, angular and brightly patterned wings not only for camouflage but also to startle potential predators with sudden displays.
*As members of the Brush Footed (Nymphalidae) family, they use their pair of shorter front legs for food tasting, and their two pairs of longer rear legs for propulsion.
