Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Also known as the Sapphire longwing.
Adult Sapho Longwings can be found in the canopy of dense forests, where males defend territories in small canopy gaps.
They occur from sea level to 2,000 m in densely forestested areas.
Sapho Longwings are found below the canopy in established tropical rainforests.

There are multiple generations each year making it possible to find adults year round.

Usually individuals fly rapidly and in the canopy.       Adults roost at night in large groups on twigs or tendrils over water.
Males defend a territory looking for receptive females to mate with. After mating, a female lays her eggs in clusters on the growing shoot of the host plants. Once the caterpillars hatch, the larvae are known to feed gregariously until they are ready to form their pupae.
The dorsal forewing surface of the Sapho Longwing is black at the tip and dark blue close to the body, with a large white patch across the middle. The hindwings are dark blue.
The ventral surface is black and white with red markings beside the body.
Heleconius sapho engages in Müllerian mimicry with fellow Lepidoptera member Heliconius. cydno.
Sapho Longwings have the ability to emit a sweet smell from a special gland found along their abdomen.
They have an estimatedlLifespan of approximately 52 days.

Diet: In Costa Rica, Sapho Longwing caterpillars feed only on Passiflora pittieri, but over other parts of their range they are polyphagous, feeding on any passion vine (family: Passifloraceae) species.)
Diet: adults are known to feed from a variety of nectar producing flowers and Psiguria for pollen.

Wingspan: 7.6 - 8.38 cm / 3.0 to 3.3 “

Family: Nymphalidae

The single biggest threat to butterfly survival is habitat destruction!!
