(Coenonympha leander)
Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Coenonympha leander is a butterfly that inhabits nutrient poor grasslands, grassy slopes and pastures especially near the woodland or near scrub.
The adults are on wing between mid-May and July (according to altitude).
The uniform row of spots on the underside hindwing and a reddish submarginal band are identifying characteristic of the Russian Heath.
They ares potentially endangered in lower altitudes because of ever increasing intensity of agriculture and subsequent loss of habitat.
