Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
The Purple Mort Bleu is found in rainforests and humid deciduous forests primarily, and can be found in flight year-round.
They are normally only seen at dawn when they sip juices from rotting fruit on the forest floor. (Both sexes are easily baited with rotting bananas.)
They are a beautiful butterfly that resembles the Owl butterfly in terms of appearance.
They rarely open their wings when stationery.
This butterfly's cryptic patterns on the ventral sides of their wings provide excellent camouflage so ithey can be undetected by predators.
They can be found from sea level to 1,200 m, in association with wet forest habitats.
They are typically encountered as rare, solitary individuals in deep shade, threading in and out of the vegetation and are most frequently found along riparian edges.
They are Sexually dimorphic.
Male have a purple cast on the forewing and hindwing inner margins.
Female have reflective blue at the bases of both wings with the forewing having a yellow submarginal band.
Both sexes have pale brown ventral sides.
They have estimated lifespans of approx. 14 days.
The single biggest threat to butterfly survival is habitat destruction!!
