Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Prioneris clemanthe are large butterflies that prefer wet forests, edges and streams and rivers.
They are a beautiful species with ventral hindwing with white or yellow spots along margin and prominent red spot at the base.
Females dorsal forewing veins are broad black towards the apex,
Their dorsal hindwings have postdiscal and submarginal dark bands.
RedSpot Sawtooths have the hindwing basal two-thirds yellow, with a small red basal patch. The veins are prominently darkened.
Sawtooths are powerful flyers and are quite fast on the wing.
They are large butterflies and resemble the Appias (Albatrosses) and the Delias (Jezebels), to which they are relatively related.
While their coloration may look poisonous, what they are actually doing is displaying "mimicry" of the Common Jezebel, tricking predators into thinking they, ike the Jezebels, are not safe to eat.
