Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Also known as the Common Mangrove Buckeye.
Junonia goneveva is found in open and urban environments throughout South America from central Argentina to Colombia.
(With the reclassification of some Junonia species, the mangrove buckeye Junonia genoveva is confined primarily to South America, and is not found in North America or the Caribbean.)
They prefer to stay in tidal flats and black-mangrove swamps.
They are a migratory butterfly that flies at low altitude, gliding between wingbeats.
They land on the ground at low altitude.
There are three or four generations from March to October.
Their dorsal wing side is brown.
The forewing have a narrow orange band which rings the large eyespot. (The eyespot is never ringed with brown.)
The ventral side of the hindwing is brown, usually without bands or eyespots and the median band is jagged.
Diet: caterpillars feed on Stachytarpheta , Ruellia tuberosa and Blechum in Jamaica .
Diet: Adults feed on flower nectar.
Wingspan: 4.5 – 5.7 cm / 1.77 – 2.25 ”
Family: Nymphalidae
The single biggest threat to butterfly survival is habitat destruction!!
