Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Delisa belladonna lives in the Himalayas from Kulu to Sikkim Bhutan at altitudes from 2,000 to 7,000 feet. Also in Assam, the Khasi Hills, the hills of Burma and Tenasserim, extending into Thailand and China.
Females are similar with aground color always paler and duller.
The markings on the dorsal side are less distinct and the subterminal series of spots on the forewing are generally farther from the margin than in the male.
Males are usually more commonly observed, with the female much less common.
They are quite difficult to distinguish from other similar jezebel subspecies.
The most notable characteristics are the entirely yellow cell patch of the ventral side hindwing, the clearly defined discal sub-median patch on the ventral forewing, the shorter yellow basal patch, and discal spot in cell 6 being usually white.
* This is a collection of very similar looking species, where accurate identification is usually only able to be determined through the study of the genitalia.
The butterflies are generally of a large size with a pattern of black ground-color and yellow stripes and spots.
Even now confusion is widespread as to the exact standing of the species and subspecies.
Avg. Wingspan: 7 – 9.8 cm / 2.75 – 3.85 “
Family: Pieridae
The single biggest threat to butterfly survival is habitat destruction!!
