Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!
Also known as a Blood Spot skipper.
(Phocides polybius) is a striking butterfly, dark with an orange head, metallic blue streaks on the wings, and two orange spots on the leading edge of its forewing.
Trailing edges of the wing are white. Also known as the Blood-spot Skipper.
There are several generations with adults on wing in February, April, and June to December in southern Texas.
They are found from the lower Rio Grande Valley of southern Texas in the United States south through Mexico and Central America to Argentina.
They have become more common in the US due to use of Guava species in ornamental landscaping.
The Guava Skipperh host plants are Guava leaves
Caterpillar diet: Psidium species, including Psidium guajava and Psidium cattleianum
Adult diet: flower nectar
Avg. wingspan: 4.2 – 6.3 cm / 1.7 – 2.5"
Family: Hesperiidae,
The single biggest threat to butterfly survival is habitat destruction!!
