Butterfly populations are a very good indicator of the health of an area's ecosystem !!

Also known as a Red Bodied Swallowtail or the Semperi Swallowtail

Lantana is one of their favorite nectaring plants.

Due to the host plants that the Batwings eat as larvae, the adults are distasteful to predators.

To advertise their distastefulness, Batwings use their red body coloration as a warning sign.

   * Females are dark brown with light pale markings on the dorsal side of the wings.

Males of this species are tailless.

It is believed that other species such as the Scarlet Mormons have developed their red coloration to take advantage of predator's avoidance of Batwings. (Batesian Mimicry)

In this species, the females are typically larger than the males.

This species is considered endemic to the Philippines.
